Poetry and Protest:

Just in Case this is Not a Perfect World

Thursday, June 5, 2025 6:00 – 8:00 pm

Guilford Free Library, 67 Park St, Guilford, CT

From the satiric plays of Aristophanes in Ancient Greece to the modern poems of Billy Collins, there are hundreds of strong and effective literary protests against various wrongs.

In this poetry discussion, we will look at some protest poems and examine the approaches they use to make their points. And we will start to consider how we might construct protest poems of our own. Though the topics covered may be serious, we will try to keep this session light, interesting, informative, and engaging for all who attend.

No previous knowledge of the subject is necessary. And you don’t need to be a person who writes poems to participate.

Discussion will be led by Mark McGuire-Schwartz, Guilford Poet Laureate.

Mark takes great joy in discussing poetry. In his own writing, he strives to find a tad of originality in this world so overcrowded with words. This led to his creating a new poetic form, the Seventeen. Further, he believes that he may be the first person to ever use the phrase “iffy, itchy, icy, insular” in a poem.

This program is free and open to all.
